Lot Essay

This work, executed from 1964-1965, was a preliminary sketch for the Memorial Bell Tower located at the Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge, New Hampshire. Rockwell collaborated with his son, Peter, who was a sculptor involved in the creating bas-relief tablets which were installed in the tower in 1966. According to Laurie Norton Moffatt, the collaboration between father and son "is one of the few known instances where Rockwell's work was commissioned for the purpose of translation into another media" (Moffatt, p. 341)
