CATO, Dionysius. Disticha de moribus. With a portion of the commentary by Robertus de Euremodio. - PHILIPPUS DE BERGAMO (1434-1520). Speculum regiminis. Augsburg: [Anton Sorg], 2 November 1475.
Chancery 2o (302 x 215 mm). Collation: [1-510 66; 7-4810 498] (1/1r table; 7/1r text, 49/8r colophon, 49/8v blank). 484 leaves. Variable number of lines, up to 40. Type: 1:103G. Two- to eight-line initial spaces, most with printed guide-letters. Rubricated with large red and blue divided Lombard initials, small red Lombards, paragraph signs and underlines; capitals filled with yellow. Headlines supplied by the rubricator. Table and text foliated separately in a contemporary hand. Traces of two systems of contemporary manuscript quiring, arabic numbers in center of lower margins on last versos, letters and numbers in upper right corners or lower right corners of leaves in the first half of each gathering. Partially inked quads printed in margins of colophon; sharp blind impressions of bearer type at foot of 49/8. (23/3.8 torn and repaired before printing, wormhole to inner blank margins of ca. 15 leaves and upper blank margins of ca. 20 leaves, a few unobtrusive smudges or stains.) Contemporary blind-ruled leather over wooden boards (rebacked), preserving many deckle edges; original vellum endleaves; two clasps (one strap renewed); original vellum label on front cover; pink leather index tabs (trimmed even with bookblock).
Provenance: Anton Dimenberger: contemporary inscription on flyleaf (Ethica Catonis. 163. GG. Antoni Dimenberger), cover title in his hand, scattered marginalia and corrections possibly in his hand.
The earliest edition of the Disticha Catonis after the protypographical editions of Utrecht, and FIRST EDITON of the Speculum regiminis. Philippus of Bergamo's treatise constitutes most of the book and is really an original work rather than just a commentary on Cato. The present edition was printed by Anton Sorg in the first year of his independent activity with a type-fount taken over from the press at the Monastery of St. Ulrich and Afra.
A TALL, FRESH COPY. HC 4711*; BMC II, 342 (IB. 5789); BSB-Ink. D-189; GW 6277; Pr 1643; Goff C-292.
