Collation: [1-310 4-68 7-2010.8 218 22-498.10 5010 518 (1/1 blank, 1/2r prologue, 1/4r text, 51/8r colophon, 51/8v blank); 526 (52/1r table, 52/5v-52/6 blank)]. 464 leaves. 59 lines and headline, double column. Types: 4:160G (headlines), 3:110AG (text). 3-, 4-, 8- and 15-line spaces for initials. Opening 8-line initial illuminated by a contemporary Nuremberg artist, in lavender modelled in white on a burnished gold ground with punch-dotted decoration and leafy extensions in colors with two gold bezants, (similar 15-line initial excised), 16 pearled Lombard initials in parti-colored blue and red with green and brown penwork, remaining initials alternately in blue and red, a few flourished, paragraph marks in red. A few contemporary quire signatures partly preserved. (Illuminated initial on a5r excised with loss of 15 lines of text in column 2 on verso, knife slits to a6, blank outer half of colophon leaf removed, the remaining printed portion detached from its conjugate and tipped to following leaf, a few marginal tears or repairs, some dampstaining at end.)

Binding: contemporary Nuremberg binding of blind-stamped brown calf over thick wooden boards, from the shop of FRANZ STAINDORFFER (Kyriss shop 65, active ca. 1474-1486), upper cover with outer border of repeated scrolling foliate tools, the same tools alternating with large rosettes on lower cover, inner border with repeated rhomboid dragon tools, central panel of curved leafy stems (on upper cover) and straight intersecting fillets (on lower cover) forming a saltire pattern, the interstices filled with large artichoke tools; cast and chased brass corner-pieces with bosses, center-piece on lower cover, brass catches, edges stained pale yellow, title lettered on fore-edge (lacking clasps and the two inner cornerpieces on lower cover, rebacked, wormed and rubbed, upper cover possibly with old restoration at top).

Provenance: effaced monastic inscription on first page.

Part III of the first complete edition of Antoninus' vast Summa of moral theology, this part previously printed by Nicolas Jenson in 1477. This copy was bound in one of several Nuremberg shops closely associated with Koberger, the most successful German printer-enterpreneur of the 15th century.
