PETRARCA, Francesco (1304-1374). De remediis utriusque fortunae. [Heidelberg: Heinrich Knoblochtzer, ca. 1490].
Chancery 4o (199 x 143 mm). Collation: [1]4; a-q8.8.8.4; r-z A-E8.8.8.4 F-G8 H-L4.8 M6 (1/1r title, 1/1v table; a1r prologue to book I; r1r prologue to book II, m6v blank). 246 leaves. a1-q4 with printed foliation I-CXII, r1-M6 with printed foliation I-CXXX. 37 lines and headline, table in two columns. Types: 5:180G (title, foliation, headings on a1r and r1r), 6:80bG (text). Two- to six-line initial spaces. Unrubricated. (Uniformly browned, a few small wormholes to first leaves, one through the entire textblock, n4.5 bound between m2.3.)
Binding: contemporary South-German blind-tooled pigskin over reverse-bevelled wooden boards, preserving some deckle edges (front hinge cracking, tear to tail of spine, gap inside back cover where three other pamphlets (as below) were removed): the covers divided by triple fillets into a frame and a central panel tooled to a saltire pattern, the intersections of the fillets marked by small rosettes, the compartments filled with a floral tool, a rosette, an owl and a Maria-banderole, the tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung; two clasps (one missing, the other strap renewed); new cloth folding case.

Second edition of this important Renaissance text of moral philosophy. This copy was formerly bound with copies of three other incunable editions: Albertanus, De arte loquendi et tacendi, Memmingen: Albrecht Kunne, 1489 (Goff A-200); Baptista Guarinus, De modo et ordine docendi ac studendi, Heidelberg: Heinrich Knoblochtzer, 1489 (Goff G-530); and Dionysius Cato, Moralismus Cato cum elegantissimo commento, Basel: Nicolaus Kesler, 1486 (Goff C-298). These were removed by Walter Goldwater.
The present edition of Petrarch is conventionally dated ca. 1490, the year when the Tegernsee copy (now in Munich) was purchased. The dates of the works formerly bound into this Sammelband confirm that the Petrarch was probably printed in 1489 or 1490.
