JACOBUS PHILIPPUS DE BERGAMO (1434-1520). Supplementum chronicarum. Venice: Bernardinus Rizus, Novariensis, 15 May 1490.
Chancery 2o (292 x204 mm). Collation: s6 2s6 ( blank, r table, 2r author's prologue to the magistrates of Bergamo); a-z A-F8 G6 (a1r text, G5r colophon, G5v quire register and device, G6 blank). 272 leaves (of 274, without the blanks), a1-G5 foliated. 60 lines and headline, printed side-notes. Types: 14:130G (headlines and first words of each book), 13:80G (text). 12-line and smaller white-on-black floriated woodcut initials, 3- and 4-line initial spaces with printed guide letters, printed paragraph marks. Woodcut device (Kristeller 268). Time-line rule in outer margin of every page. Woodcuts: large cut of the Creation of Eve on first text page, 3 half-page woodcuts of the expulsion from Paradise, Cain slaying Abel, and the tower of Babel, 63 mostly small cuts of town views, some repeated. (First 3 quires and last quire stained and with repairs to gutters and other marginal repairs, large wormhole through first 20 leaves, minor worming in last 2 leaves, stain with small hole in A6-7, some staining and soiling throughout). 17th-century brown sheep over pasteboard, sides panelled and divided in four triangular compartments by quadruple blind fillets, spine with three flat raised bands, similarly panelled, and title lettered in ink, back endleaves preserving printed waste from a 1675 Bolognese imprint (later endbands, endleaves renewed, scrapes to covers, extremities worn).
Provenance: Petrus Filius Clarinus de Petrisgemellus of Valliscande(?) in the diocese of Novara (inscription below colophon, followed by long inscription by his son or daughter stating that he died on 4 February 1533, close to midnight, leaving five children, three sons and two daughters, his wife Bartola, daughter of Adam de Salino, the annotator's mother, having died on 3 June 1529; marginal notes in both hands, cropped) -- some later marginalia.
Fourth edition, second illustrated edition, of Jacobus de Bergamo's popular world chronicle. Most of the woodcut illustrations and the woodcut initials are those of the 1486 edition by Bernardinus Benalius. Rizius added to them the Tower of Babel cut and fine larger city-view cuts of Venice, Rome, Verona and Genoa. The view of Rome may be the earliest printed view of that city (cf. Essling, I, p. 303).
