LEONARDUS DE UTINO (ca. 1400-1470). Sermones quadragesimales de legibus dicti. Vicenza: Stephan Koblinger, 24 November 1479.

Collation: a-s10 t8 v-y10 1-28 3-1910 (a1r blank, a1v table, a2r text, 19/10r dedicatory epistle from Matthaeus Pigafetta to Nicolaus Rubeus, colophon, 19/10v blank). 404 leaves, double column. 52 lines. Types: 2:150G (opening words of sermons); 3:74G (text). 11-, 6- and 5-line initial spaces. Contemporary manuscript foliation. One initial (n2r) supplied in red with reserved decoration, occasional paragraph marks. (Printing flaw obscuring 4 letters on q4r, small wormholes in last quire affecting a few letters, marginal dampstaining in last 3 quires, red ink splashes on 16/6-7.)
Binding: contemporary North Italian light brown blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, covers panelled with outer border of a repeated palm-leaf tool, inner border of repeated curved knotwork tools forming plaited effect, and central panel filled with repeated hatched Greek cross tools, the tools not in Kyriss or Schwenke-Sammlung, spine compartments cross-hatched to a diaper design, evidence of four fore-edge clasps, title and ownership inscription "Co[n]to del Borgo" neatly lettered on lower edges, number 23 and flower in ink on upper edges (rebacked preserving original backstrip, lacking clasps and catches, covers wormed and rubbed with substantial loss of leather, a few small restorations); preserving many deckle edges.
Provenance: contemporary humanist marginalia (glosses and notes of references to classical authors), foliation and paragraph marks in the same hand -- Count of Borgo (?17th-century inscription and the number 47 on lower edges) -- fr. Franciscus de Menabis (17th or 18th-century inscription, a2r).
The second of four books printed at Vicenza by the prototypographer of Vienna. This edition of the Udine Dominican Leonardo's popular sermons is a page-for-page reprint of the first edition, printed in 1473 at Venice by Franciscus Renner and Nicolaus de Frankfordia. Koblinger probably trained in Renner's office, since the material and texts of all three of Koblinger's signed Vicenza editions show connections with Renner, including the unusual method of signing using the alphabet (a-y) followed by arabic numerals. The two gothic founts used in both this and Koblinger's 1480 edition of Utino's Sermones de sanctis vary only slightly from types of the same size used by Renner up until 1477-1478. Koblinger presumably acquired the punches and/or types after the dissolution of the Renner-Frankfordia partnership in 1477. By 1481 Koblinger had returned to his native Vienna, where he was almost certainly responsible for the production of a German-Italian vocabulary and 7 or 8 other unsigned tracts, printed in 1482 and 1485.
