This album originally comprised twenty-four leaves which were dispersed during the Cultural Revolution. Eight of the remaining leaves have been mounted and bound into the present album by Lu Yanshao's family and remained in their possession. The leaves were painted in 1965, on the eve of the Cultural Revolution the following year, when there was still high hopes and anticipation for new development and achievements in the country. Indeed, in his autobiography, Lu Yanshao remembers a sketching field-trip to Anhui in 1964 and, amongst the newly built modern structures, was much impressed with the Xin'an Jiang reservoir and dam (Note 1). Sketches from this visit obviouely provided the basis for the first and second leaves of Xin'an Jiang in the present album.

Note 1: See Lu Yanshao, op.cit. at pp.80-82
