An important dated eight-panel coromandel lacquer screen
Dated to the summer of the Ji Wei year of the reign of Kangxi, corresponding to 1679 and of the period
Depicting a large celebration in a lavish setting with a central reception hall set in a garden with a bridge and surrounded by numerous pavilions and walkways, the boundaries delineated by a tiled wall with several horses and grooms waiting on the other side, the central scene showing two women dancing before a dignitary seated on a throne as groups of figures approach to pay tribute, further away scenes of smaller figure groups playing go, music, chatting or walking, the upper panels decoarted with antiquities, the sides with dragons grasping the sacred pearl, the lower section with an array of fabulous animals including a tiger, leopard, lions and an elephant, the reverse inscribed with a long double birthday encomium and dated, the top with rocky river landscapes, the sides with antiquities, the bottom detailed with the flowers and birds of the season (minor damages and some retouches)

Lot Essay

This is a double birthday screen. The inscription is an encomium to a Mr. and Mrs. Huang, both celebrating 70th birthdays. The language is formal and congratulatory, and is dated the summer of Ji Wei year of the Kangxi era.
