Lot Essay

Born the son of Hon. Francis Prittie of Glenview, Clonmel Edward Prittie served in the army from 1872-74 before studying art. In 1874 he entered the Academy in Brussels where he won a medal and first prize for painting within six months. He was so highly regarded by Joseph Stallaert, the director of the Academy, that he was invited to work in his studio. A painter of Belgian genre scenes, literary and biblical subjects and some mediterranean works, his promising career was cut short by an early death in 1888. Only a handful of his work is known in private collections.
