Lot Essay

Interesting album of photographs taken by Clyde Waddel, who was Chief Photographer for the Houston Press before entering the army. He was the personal press photographer for Supreme Commander Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten and later a news photographer. He took these photographs during a period of leave, primarily at the request of friends wanting photographs of Calcutta.

Comprising street scenes, harbour views, individual and group portraits including snake charmers, performers, beggars, dock-workers, shoe-makers, street-sellers, housewives praying, a child bride, Brahmins at worship and Hindus bathing.
