Lot Essay

In 1961 Edward Quinn and Roland Penrose commissioned Picasso to produce ten drawings as designs for the front and back covers of their book Picasso à l'oeuvre, un étude photographique intime. The authors chose two drawings which were used when the book was published in Paris, 1965. The remaining eight designs (which also include lots 388 and 389) remained in the artist's collection until about 1970.
