Lot Essay

The triple-branch lantern, surmounted by a sacred flame-finialed urn for colza-oil, is hung with ivy-leaved Pan masks in the manner of Roman bronze lamps. It is further embellished with palm-flowers and a thyrsus finial wrapped by Roman acanthus. The lantern may have been commissioned by George Wilbraham (d. 1852) shortly after his inheritance of Delamere House, Cheshire in 1813.
A pair of colza lanterns of this pattern at Wateringbury Place, Kent, was sold by David Style Esq., Christie's house sale, 31 May 1978, lot 189, and another related one was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 7 July 1994, lot 8.
