Of sarcophagus shape, the cut-cornered rectangular hinged top above a concave border, enclosing a fitted lead-lined interior with plug-hole, the tapering body with a reeded band around the base, on four paw feet with sunk castors, one foot restored
25¼ in. (64 cm.) wide; 18 in. (46 cm.) high; 17¾ in. (45 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

Cisterns of this sarcophagus form, with canted corners terminating in bacchic lion-paw feet, were provided around 1810 for Goodwood House, Sussex (Chefs d'Oeuvre de Goodwood, Paris, 1992, no. 65/66). A related cistern or cellaret with Grecian-reeded base, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 9 November 1990, lot 141.
