Lot Essay

'La Dame aux Camelias' was a popular play ever since it's appearence in 1852, and Mucha's poster for Sarah Bernhardt is said to be one of her favourites. In fact the poster was so popular that Champenois reproduced it as a postcard and in 1899 it could be purchased in poster format from 'La Plume' for 10 francs.
