LEE, Robert E. ANS ("R.E. Lee"), as President of Washington College, [Lexington, Virginia], 20 January 1868. 1 page, small square sheet of lined note paper (125 x 125 mm.), tipped to a stiff sheet of paper, slight stains, a bit browned. The President of Washington College Lee cancels classes (perhaps due to weather conditions?) with a simple note which was posted on a campus bulletin board: "The exercises of the College are Suspended for the day." After his pardon, Lee devoted himself to the education of southern youth. With the help of a strong faculty he increased enrollment and brought the college to a high academic standard after becoming president in 1865.
