Comparison can be made with two other river landscapes by the artist, the first offered at Lempertz, Cologne, 12 December 1991, lot 197; and the second, which had previously been attributed to Jacob van Ruisdael, in which the figures by the water's edge in the present lot are repeated (Christie's, London, 30 November 1973, lot 106).
