Lot Essay

Elms at Sunrise dates from the beginning of Gutmann's residence in the small town of Silvermine, Connecticut. In 1915, Gutmann built a house for his family there, which became the home to which they returned after their frequent trips abroad. Gutmann's light, open brushwork and his use of a subdued palette give this work the quiet mood of early evening.
