BRADFORD, William (c.1779-1857). Sketches of the country, character, and costume, in Portugal and Spain, made during the campaign, and on the route of the British army, in 1808 and 1809. London: by William Savage for John Booth, 1810.
2 parts in one volume, 2° (471 x 322mm). Engraved frontispiece, 53 hand-coloured aquatint plates, most by I. Clark after Bradford, a few after H. Michel. (Frontispiece spotted, some light marginal soiling of plates and text, plate of the 'Spanish Lady and Attendant' opposite p. 25 with closed tear at lower margin, soiling a little heavier to the 'Castle of Benevente' plate opposite p. 34.) Contemporary gilt-panelled olive morocco, gilt edges (spine relaid and repaired at head, leather slightly darkened at edges, corners rubbed and bumped). Provenance: Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1866-1956, bookplate).
Second issue, the work having first appeared in [?]24 parts, 1809-1810. The sectional title to Sketches of Military Costume in Spain and Portugal is also dated 1810, while the plates are watermarked J. Whatman, 1808-1809. Bradford was Chaplain of Brigade to the expedition and his Sketches of Portugal and Spain were understandably popular, further issues following in 1812, 1813 and 1823.
