Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1582.
2° (341 x 212mm). Engraved title and 21 numbered plates, folding or double-page, on guards, by Abraham de Bruyn. (Very light dampstaining, occasional small stain, first plate neatly repaired on verso, one plate neatly torn at fold, small tear at title fore-edge.) 18th-century polished calf, narrow gilt roll-tool to sides, gilt spine, red leather spine label, speckled edges (very slight wear at upper corners). Provenance: R. D. Arents (18th-century bookplate).
A rare fête book describing and illustrating the festivities held to celebrate the entry of François, duc d'Anjou into Antwerp on 19 February 1582 and his coronation there as Duke of Brabant, succeeding the Spanish Philip II as sovereign of the Netherlands. It traces his journey from England, where he had gone in the hope of marrying Queen Elizabeth I, and his visits to Flushing and Middleburg. The plates depict the ducal procession, the coronation, the chariots, including an elephant and Neptune, staged theatricals, triumphal arches and other structures, and fireworks. One engraving shows the games-playing and illumination of the main square. The artistic designers of the elaborate festivities were Peter Leys and Vredeman de Vries. None of the plates are signed, but Vinet attributed them to Abraham de Bruyn; the Soleinne catalogue gave them to Philippe Galle; and Landwehr concurs with Vinet in assigning them to De Bruyn. The engraved allegorical frame of the title also appeared in Plantin's French edition of Guicciardini in the same year. Berlin Kat. 2942; Labore et Constantia, 231; Landwehr Splendid Ceremonies (1971) 38; Vinet 476; Voet 1211.
