Letterpress half-title, title printed in red and black with engraved device in blue, divisional half-title to part II, numerous text diagrams, including one full-page, and 6 engraved plates, including 4 folding, by Alexius Giardoni, Tibetan characters designed by Francisco Orazio della Penna di Billi and cut by Antonio Fontarita in 1738, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. (One marginal repair.) Original blue paper wrappers, paper spine label, modern brown watered silk chemise and tan morocco solander box with central panel of brown watered silk. Provenance: Holstein-Holsteinborg (blue ink stamp on title).
A FINE COPY, UNCUT AND LARGELY UNOPENED of the second edition of the first full treatment of the Tibetan language. It is based on information sent back by the missionaries Francisco Orazio della Penna di Billi and Cassiano di Macerata, from the Capuchin mission at Lhasa, and contains much information on Tibetan culture and philosophy, in addition to language.
