4° (192 x 132mm). Collation: A-B6 C4 D8 E4 F6 G4 H6. Roman type. (Title lightly soiled, faint dampstain at lower margin.) 19th-century calf-backed pastepaper boards, flat spine gilt. Provenance: annotations by a contemporary reader, who has marked, among other things, unusual nouns used by poets, transcribing one into Greek ('Scenobates').

SECOND EDITION of a manual on poetry, written for the instruction of young aspiring poets by the Dominican Jacobus Gaudensis of Cologne. It is a practical manual, giving information on syllables, epithets, a dictionary of obscure words, names of gods and places, and a dictionary of Greek and Hebrew orthography. It ends with paraphrases of classical poetry and poems by the author, including one addressed to Johann Rinck (d.1516), mayor of Cologne and patron of Sebastian Brant and Jacob Wimpfeling.
