Large 2° (668 x 478mm). Half-title, engraved title, arms of the dedicatee, Charles IV, headpiece, 2 initials and a tailpiece, and 14 numbered double-page plates, by C. Nolli, N. Orazi, R. Pozzi and F. Morghern after Vanitelli. (Some light mainly marginal soiling and waterstaining of plates, plate 6 lightly browned and with short tear at lower margin, text more heavily waterstained.) Contemporary sheep, red speckled edges (extremities worn).
FIRST EDITION of the first part (all published) of the drawings for the magnificent palace of Caserta which Vanitelli began in 1752 for Charles's son, Ferdinand IV, although it was not finished until 1774. Berlin Kat. 2706; Cicognara 4105: 'Non esiste un Palazzo inventato con altrettanta grandezza, veramente Reale, in alcun altro Paese di Europa'; Fowler 348.
