Lot Essay

This is probably after a lost drawing by Bertoja for the fresco in the Sala delle Gesta Rossiane in the Rocca of San Secondo executed by Bertoja in 1565-1572. The present drawing differs from the fresco in the background. The fresco was part of a series commissioned by Marchese Troilus to celebrate his ancestors from the Rossi family. A drawing by Bertoja for these decorations was sold at Christie's, New York, 28 January 2000, lot 7.
