RUGGIERO LEONCAVALLO (1858-1919)
Caricature drawn in pencil by A. Pino, signed in pencil 'R. Leoncavallo' and inscribed 'Lisbon, 24 May 1906', with autograph musical quotation of two bars from his opera Pagliaccio, inscribed 'Ridi Pagliaccio', mounted on card (one or two small tears to edges, paper discoloured).

Lot Essay

Leoncavallo's Pagliacci was his most famous work. The premiere on 21 May 1892 under Toscanini in Milan made him a celebrity overnight but he was never to repeat such success with subsequent works.
A. Pino was the set designer at the Opera House in Lisbon.
