Lot Essay

This charming photograph was inscribed and sent to Mrs Ryland in thanks for a 'Victorian Cup', a cup incorporating Victorian coins in the design, which Mrs Ryland had made for the young Prince Edward of York, 'I think the happy result may be considered artistically unique', she says in her letter. As she is single and childless herself, she is most anxious that the Prince is presented with the cup personally, if not she asks for it to be returned to her.
