GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
Autograph note, signed with initials 'G.B.S.' on Ayot St. Lawrence correspondence card, 1 December 1944, to his publisher, indicating a textual correction to be made, 'the correction on page 28, line 7 from foot, where OR should be OF, is for the Whatswhat, not for Methuselah. I forgot that I was changing the subject', complaining that he has not received any proofs and mentioning that the O.U.P. must pay him for writing the postscript, with receiving date stamp of 4 December 1944.

Lot Essay

This card refers to Shaw's play, Back to Methuselah, first published in 1921. In 1944, he extensively revised both the preface and the play, and provided a postscript entitled After Twenty Five Years for the World's Classics series, published by Oxford University Press. This card would therefore refer directly to this revision.
