Edo period (19th century)
A lacquered pipecase, black lacquer ground decorated in gold hiramaki-e, gold dust, shell and pottery with peonies growing in a jardinière, signed in shell inlay Yokei; and a bamboo pipecase, applied in high-relief stained ivory with the Shichifukujin [Seven Gods of Good Fortune] carousing under a banner inscribed Omatsuri kitaru jugonichi [Great Festival on the 15th next] signed on a square red lacquer plaque underneath Yuan or Yuei to [carved by Yuan or Yuei]
