A TSUBA INSCRIBED UJISHIGE AND FOURTEEN OTHERS
Momoyama/Edo period (16th/19th century)
An iron sukashi tsuba with signature Bushu no ju Ujishige saku, 7.9cm.; a sukashi tsuba pierced with three cranes, possibly later Akasaka, 7.2cm.; a sukashi tsuba, formed from two spurred rings, 7.3cm.; a rounded square iron tsuba of the late Kaneie type, carved and inlaid with a ferry boat on a lake, with Mount Fuji in the distance, 8.6cm.; a Kyo-sukashi tsuba pierced with a ring of stars, this tsuba has been in a fire and the surface is covered in fire-scale, 7.8cm.; a large circular iron Kamakura tsuba carved with chrysanthemum petals on both sides, 8.7cm.; a mokko-shaped iron tsuba, engraved and inlaid in brass with a star constellation, 8.6cm.; a thick square iron tsuba pierced with four gourds, 6.9cm.; a circular iron katchushi tsuba of katami-gawari design [divided in two halves], the lower left pierced with a kiri-like mon and the upper right pierced with the petals of a chrysanthemum bloom, 8.1cm.; and an iron Heianjo school tsuba, of square shape, each corner with a semi-circular indent, carved and inlaid in silver brass and copper with a boatman on a lake in a mountainous terrain, signed Heianjo no ju Shigehiro saku, 7.2cm.; an iron mokko-shaped tsuba with four large 'boar's eye' piercings inlaid in brass with a roped border enclosing a design of aoi leaves and scrolling vines, Heianjo, 7.8cm.; a fine iron tanto tsuba carved and pierced with a design of plaited straw rope, incorporating fragments of twig and seed pods inlaid in gold, signed Inshu no ju Masamitsu, 6.2cm.; a circular iron tsuba, tapering towards the edge, etched in relief with bamboo in the wind finished in gold nunome-zogan, with signature Jakushi, 7.6cm.; a katchushi tsuba pierced with two mon, 7.8cm.; and a circular iron tsuba carved and inlaid with shibuichi, copper, silver and gold with a man holding a broom, standing outside a thatched house looking up at a flight of geese flying towards the sun, two sheaves of drying rice on the reverse, signed Kaneshige, Nara school, 7.2cm.
