A KATCHUSHI TSUBA AND THIRTEEN OTHERS
Muromachi/Edo period (16th/19th century)
An iron cup-shaped katchushi tsuba, pierced with three circles and inscribed with two kanji, 8.4cm.; a large Aizu Shoami tsuba carved with the sun sinking over the edge of the tsuba and a boat moored amongst sedge, 9.1cm.; a smaller Ito-sukashi tsuba pierced with two rats in fine and broad saw-piercing, 6.8cm.; a hexagonal iron tsuba engraved with a tortoiseshell pattern on one side and foliage on the other, with signature Nobuie, 7.4cm.; a large irregularly shaped iron Tenbo tsuba, 8.9cm.; a mokko-shaped iron tsuba punched on both sides with a repeated sosho character, the udenuki-ana [pair of holes for a securing cord] lined with shakudo, 8.15cm.; an iron tsuba pierced and carved with aoi leaves in gourd-shaped reserves, details in gold nunome-zogan, 7.25cm.; a large mokko-shaped iron katchushi tsuba pierced with a reishi fungus and udenuki-ana, 10.3cm.; a large circular iron tsuba with a roped edge, carved with a dragon threading its way in and out of clouds, 10.1cm.; a rounded square iron tsuba carved with a Chinese man poling a boat in which sits a lady, the reverse with mountains and sedge, signed Munehide, 8.2cm.; a square iron tsuba pierced with cha-sen [tea whisks for cha-no-yu], flying geese, kettle rings and cloves, 6.9cm.; an iron Kawaji (Choshu) school tsuba carved and pierced with a blossoming plum tree, 7.25cm.; a circular iron katchushi tsuba with 'splash' inlay of yamagane or sahari, 7.9cm.; a circular iron Ko-Shoami tsuba with a shakudo rim, carved, hot-stamped and inlaid with a man poling a boat through reeds, beyond him a mountain with pine trees and bamboo, on the reverse two more boats are moored amongst the reeds, details in gold nunome-zogan, 8.3cm; and a circular iron Bushu tsuba well carved in shishiai-bori, details inlaid in gold, with a horse beneath a cherry tree, signed Bushu no ju Masayoshi, 7.4cm.
