Lot Essay

The first is a rare example of a sword-fitting decorated in the style associated with the great painter and lacquerer Ogata Korin (1658-1716) and possibly made during his lifetime or shortly thereafter. The use of lead and shell overlay is also seen in Korin lacquers.
