Lot Essay

Woodcock particularly fascinated Thorburn and he painted them on the shore, nestling in autumn leaves, in snow and roding at sunset. A watercolour of a woodcock nestling in autumn leaves, measuring 7.5/8 x 11¾ in., sold at Christie's London, 30 September 1997, lot 65 (£28,750).
