Lot Essay
The present painting is observed from the centre of the racecourse, almost level with the winning post. The stand on the right of the composition appears to be one that was used by members of the Jockey Club which disappeared during the Second World War. Cundall exhibited two Derby Day compositions at the Royal Academy, in 1933 and 1938. The winner in 1933 was Lord Derby's Hyperion and in 1938 the winner was Mr. P. Beatty's Bois Roussel. In 1938 Bois Roussel won in white with a maroon and white quartered cap; he would have passed Scottish Union in blue a yellow quarters and Pasch in rose with a hooped cap.
