A George IV presentation cup,
on chased and gadrooned rising pedestal foot, the campana shaped bowl chased in relief with a grape harvest scene above a band of acanthus foliage, the pedestal chased with stylised foliage and engraved with a crest, the interior gilded and engraved with a presentation inscription, "Presented by Order of His Imperial Majesty Alexander I, Emperor of the all the Russias to Mr Grant Preston, of Burr Street London for his various nautical inventions through His Majesty's Ambassador in London, the Count Lieven 23 Spetr..1823 Meritum Compensare", by Philip Rundell, 1821 - 34.75cm high, 66oz.
Grant Preston was active between the years 1813-1851, during which time he manufactured a number of scientific instruments, but he seems to have specialised in compasses, one of which he patented in 1832.
