Lot Essay

After working in Rome in the studio of his father Karl, Ludwig Cauer (d. 1947) returned to Berlin and studied sculpture at the Academy under Reinhold Begas and Albert Wolff from 1882-1885. After spending time in Paris and two years in London from 1891-1893, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy, he established a studio in Berlin.

Cauer's figure of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, was sculpted and cast in bronze in 1888, the date borne by the present example. A lifesize marble version of the figure was completed in 1890 for the Schlosspark, Saarbrücken and a further bronze cast exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1892 (no. 2000), during Cauer's stay in London.
