Mike Hailwood already a legend and multiple world champion on two wheels, took up motor racing cars seriously in 1969, joining John Surtees' Team in 1971, managed by Rob Walker; culminating in winning the Formula 2 Championship in 1972; during which season he alternated driving Formula 1 cars as well, with a fine 2nd place finish at Monza to Emerson Fittapaldi, who clinched the World Championship with his win.
Mike was never destined to win a Grand Prix on four wheels. In 1973 after a mixed season of high potential during the South African Grand Prix, Mike was involved in a terrifying accident involving Clay Reggazoni's Ferrari, which caught fire; Mike was awarded the George Medal for his bravery in pulling Regazzoni from the blazing inferno.
He moved to Yardley Mclaren for the 1974 season where he started quite well - 4th, Argentina; 5th Brazil and 3rd in South Africa and several other top six finishes; however in a serious accident at the Nurburgring he broke several bones, fracturing his right calf and knee; after long recuperation he realised his career was finished and he never drove racing cars again.
This helmet was given to Rob Walker as memento of their long-standing friendship,
