Lot Essay

Fernando Botero began sculpting in 1976 giving his full-bodied images three-dimensional life. As the artist moved from painting to sculpture, his lush painterly style evolved into bronze surfaces so refined as to be comparable to porcelain, exemplified in his sumptuous Reclining Woman. Having developed his voluminous personnage in paint, the artist masterfully commands volume and patina in bronze with his signature wit and effervescence.
