Lot Essay

A painter of portraits, figures and genre scenes, he was the son of the artist Jules Bouvier (1800-1867), who was born in Paris, but moved to London in 1818. Augustus Jules Bouvier entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1841 and afterwards studied in Paris. Heavily infuenced by the emerging aesthetic movement his interest was primarily in the juxtaposition and interrelation of colour. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institute and at Suffolk Street. He produced a series of drawings of Queens of England, which was engraved.
