A rare Aachen-Raeren stoneware face jug
Circa 1520-1550
The light brown spindle-shaped rilled body incised and scratched with an anthropomorphic face, the foot frilled, with loop handle (minor restoration to the neck)
20.5cm. (8 in.) high

Lot Essay

The beginnings of Raeren stoneware probably lie in Aachen (Aix la Chapelle), just a few miles away. The face jugs derive from Roman models. These jugs probably supplied the model for the Cologne-Frechen Bartmannkrug jugs.
