Lot Essay
(cf.lit. H.F. Bruynel-van der Palm ed., Jan Mankes, Utrecht 1989, p. 47).
Annie Zernike was the first female Dutch clergyman in the Netherlands. In 1911, she was appointed in the Mennonite Community of Boven-Knijpe, a job she had to say farewell to when she married Jan Mankes in 1915, to move to The Hague.
In 1918, she received a doctor's degree at the theological faculty in Amsterdam. Between 1914 and 1920, Mankes executed several portraits of his wife. In almost all these portraits, she is represented in profile, seen from the left, a pose much favoured by Mankes in all his portraits.
