A PAIR OF CASPIAN SILVER ROUNDELS
circa early 1st millennium b.c.
Both ornamented with two heraldic lions flanking the raised omphalos, each standing on its outer hind-leg, the other hind-legs pressed together, their tails rising behind, their fur depicted as stippling and hatching, each with a raised mane, their mouths wide open exposing fangs as they prey on a recumbent bull, one facing left, the other facing right, with a large bulging eye and short curving horns, its tail curved over its back, the omphalos with a rosette, the shallow roundels slightly concave, with raised rims, each with six pins for attachment
