Attributed to Isaac Spackmann
Depicting a yellow bellied green cuckoo on a mossy branch, in a black and gilt-japanned concave-moulded frame, inscribed in pencil to the reverse 'Yellow Bellied Green Cuckcow Ceylon (?)', the reverse of the frame with paper label inscribed in ink 'Yellow Bellied Green Cuckcow Ceylon' and with Ackermann, New York trade label, refreshments to the decoration

Lot Essay

The Islington artist Isaac Spackman (d. 1771) issued three sets of embossed birds: in 1754, 1764 and 1769 (A.K. Longfield, 'Identifying Spackman's Embossed Pictures', Country Life, 25 January 1979, pp. 196-197).
A pair of embossed bird-pictures attributed to Spackman was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 15 November 1990, lot 12.
