Of octagonal shape, the hinged lid inlaid with a central oyster veneer within a swagged cartouche with thuya panels and with a conforming border to the edge, enclosing a plain paper-lined interior, the crossbanded sides with oval cartouches within a beaded garland and ribbon-tied top
4 in. (10 cm.) high; 10¾ in. (27.5 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The box, with golden tablets displaying shell-patterned veneers in medallions wreathed by ribbon-tied pearls, is likely to have been made for the display of shells (C. Graham, 'Beauties of Shell Work', Antique Collector, August 1989, pp. 42-48).
