DIMAGGIO, Joe.
Autograph Letter Signed ("Joe"), to "Dearest" (Marilyn Monroe)
2 pages, quarto, New York, no date (January 1962), on stationery of the Lexington Hotel. Although their marriage was over by the time Joltin' Joe penned this letter, he would be in love with her to the end of his days. This excellent letter to Marilyn in California reveals the warmth of his affections for her as well as a sexy, playful side. In full, this very personal letter to his wife reads: "Dearest As promised I'm enclosing the clippings. As you might notice, [by] the picture showing #5 [Dimaggio's jersey number] that I have a pretty 'broad can' For my defense I offer that the uniform was a newly fitted one that has not been laundered. Busy-busy week on tap. City hall with a group to have our picture taken with the mayor for the upcoming dinner on the twenty-first -- tailor -- shirt maker-- lawyer's and accountant's office, etc. I hope to get all my affairs taken care of before embarking to Florida with the yankees as my host. Who knows, maybe I can win myself a position with the team." After this light dusting of sarcasm, Joe attempts to assure his ex that he is not sleeping with anyone. "Enjoyed talking to you last night and lest I forget -- let me assure you that my maid only makes up one bed in the morning and that's hardly messed, and no wise remarks, rascal jr. Miss you -- do hope you get in before the 1st of February. It seems ages since I've seen you -- My love to you -- Joe." Included in the lot are the clippings referred to in the letter. One is about Yankee training camp in Florida, "...it was great for the town of St Petersburg, especially when DiMag's ex-wife showed up. She's somebody named Marilyn Monroe ... [and] just in case she wants to know where DiMaggio will be (they still call each other 'friends') the Yankee players want it known that he's staying at the Yankee Clipper. So are they." The article runs with a photograph of Joe DiMaggio on which he has drawn slimming lines down the sides of his 'broad can' and written "more like it." This important letter offers unique insight into the relationship of two very complicated and public people. It would seem to prove that they remained intimate even after the marriage ended.
Provenance: Acquired through XXXX Marilyn's secretary and her mother's caretaker; A gift from Marilyn Monroe. Easily the best DiMaggio letter to reach the market.
