Lot Essay

The present pieces are probably life-size terracotta modellos for works to be executed in marble. The characterful facial expressions and sensitive handling of the draperies are typical of the work of sculptors working in Rome during the second quarter of the 17th century. For example, see Alessandro Algardi's bust of Roberto Frangione in S. Marcello, Rome (Montagu, loc. cit.).
