Lot Essay

These figures were probably conceived as furniture-mounts and appear on Louis XIV furniture executed by André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732), but also on Louis XVI 'Boulle' pieces, which often incorporate earlier marquetry panels and ormolu mounts. They appear on a pair of armoires by Boulle at Versailles (illustrated in A. Pradère, Les Ebénistes Français, Paris, 1987, fig. 22), whereas Bacchus together with Flora feature on a cabinet by Philippe-Claude Montigny (maître in 1766) in the Getty Museum (C. Bremer-David, Decorative Arts, A Summary catalogue of the Collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 1993, p.20).
