Lot Essay

This sheet combines a rare genre scene with a design for one of the many friezes which display Giulio's seemingly limitless powers of invention as the decorator of the Palazzo Te in Mantua. A similar, albeit more complex frieze design, was formerly in the Ellesmere Collection, Christie's, New York, 12 January 1995, lot 7.
