Lot Essay

In addition to his popular text paintings, Christopher Wool has also produced a number of printed pattern paintings with repetitive decorative elements. These works resulted from his investigations into new, contemporary ways of handling painting in general, avoiding illusionistic means. Based on the tradition of Andy Warhol, Wool takes as much as possible away from the decor and transforms it into an abstract composition. Taking this one step further, he deals with finer nuances and more complex structures in the paintings. The literal meanings might be less direct than in the word paintings, but the subtleness adds a certain depth to his subjective messages.
