Lot Essay

Captain John Gabriel Stedman (1744-1797) was both a soldier and author who served in the Dutch army, 1760-72 and 1777-83. He was a volunteer in expedition against revolted negros in Surinam, 1772-7 and was a major in the British army (Scots brigade), 1793, Lieutenant-Colonel, 1796.
