Knud Andreassen Baade met Johan Christian Dahl in Sogn in 1839, a meeting which was to have a profound effect on the younger man's career. Having dedicated himself first to figure painting under Eckersberg at the Copenhagen Academy and then to portaiture at Christiania, Baade followed Dahl to Dresden and became one of several young Norwegian artists to benefit from Dahl's informal teachings. He later settled in Munich where he further developed under the influence of late South German Romanticism.
