Rayons du soir

The present work, depicting the bay at Camaret on the western coast of Brittany, relates to a similarly composed picture by Cottet of the same title which was purchased by the French state in 1893 and now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Cottet was to go on to become a friend of Rodin, serving under the sculptor's presidency of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, and the Musée Rodin today holds a number of works by Cottet acquired by Rodin.
